    Hormones and muscle tension: a forgotten connection

    Your body constantly changes throughout your cycle. In the first half, estrogen dominates, often contributing to energy and flexibility. After ovulation, progesterone levels rise, making your nervous system, connective tissue, and muscle tension more sensitive. It’s during this phase that muscles, such as those in your jaw, may feel more prone to tightness.

    Research shows that temporomandibular disorders, such as TMD, occur significantly more often in women with hormonal or menstrual irregularities. In addition, studies suggest that hormonal fluctuations play a role in the intensity of these pain symptoms. On a molecular level, research indicates that estrogen has active receptors in the jaw region and influences inflammatory responses, connective tissue structure, and pain perception.

    Why your jaw reacts so strongly
